Tottenham Hotspurs will demand at least £35million from Manchester United for Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. United are set to beat rivals Chelsea to the Spurs playmaker, but had hoped to pay around £25million initially with a further £5m in performance-related additions.
He is currently in line for a bumper four-year contract worth £125,000-a-week, and £26m in all. No decision will be made until Modric returns from the Euros 2012. His team face a fight to qualify from a tough group, which contains Italy, Spain and the Republic of Ireland, their first opponents of the tournament in Poznan on Sunday.
Tottenham had to fight to keep Modric out of Chelsea’s clutches last year. Although with Harry Redknapp’s side narrowly missing out on Champions League football next season, the club look likely to lose several big stars this summer.
