Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski, according to his boss with Poland’s national team. Sir Alex Fergusion watched Dortmund’s impressive 5-2 German Cup final win over Bayern Munich last month and has since signed Shinji kagawa for £17million.
Lewandowski, 23, scored a hat-trick that game and is one of Poland’s key players at Euro 2012, scoring their first goal of the tournament (a powerful header) in their opening 1-1 draw with Greece.
Lewandowski is set to enter the final two years of his current deal and contract talks with Dortmund broke down last month. His agent Maik Barthel said at the time: “the offer from Dortmund is not enough and I can confirm there is interest from Manchester United.” Ferguson is also keen on a third Dortmund player, Germany defender Mats Hummels.
Despite the £17million signing of Kagawa this week, United fans are still desperate for a big name signing. Supporters are concerned that United’s spending power in the transfer market is being inhibited by using funds to pay off the owning Glazer family’s debt. This signing will certainly be a step in the right direction.
