The England shirt numbers have been announced for Euro 2012, and one can assume from the numbers who will be starting in the first game.
One of the surprises was Andy Carroll being given the number 9 shirt, indicating he is favourite to start in the suspended Wayne Rooney’s absence against France and Sweden.
Gary Cahill has been given the number 5 shirt, suggesting that he will line up alongside his Chelsea colleagues John Terry and Ashley Cole in England’s defence.
Carroll has endured a tough season for Liverpool, and many thought he would not make the squad after flopping following his record-breaking £35million transfer. However Hodgson was evidently impressed by his late surge of form and subsequently selected him ahead of Peter Crouch and Daniel Sturridge.
