England’s only right-back picked in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad, Glen Johnson, had to limp off the pitch at the squad’s first public training session this morning in Manchester. Tottenham’s Kyle Walker was sidelined with an injury and Manchester City’s Micah Richards had a shock omission from the squad, despite being the best candidate for the role.
The FA downplayed Johnson’s early exit at the Etihad Stadium, insisting he was forced off early with an ‘infected toe’. Club-mate Martin Kelly is on standby should Johnson not recover in time for Saturday’s game against Norway.
Manchester United defender Phil Jones is also versatile and can deputise at right-back.In a small-sided match, Hodgson actually line Jagielka up alongside Lescott, with Jones in the full-back role, with new coach Gary Neville a central figure in the other team.
Man United striker Danny Welbeck conducted a solo session due to his injured ankle on April 30th in the Manchester Derby, although it did not look to strenuous and he is unlikely to figure this weekend. Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker, who has been struggling with an Achilles problem came through the session unscathed.
