A 15 year old boy has been sentenced to three years in juvenile detention in the United Arab Emirates for kissing two sisters. The father of the two 13 year old girls caught the boy in his house in Abu-Dhabi and consequently called the police. The boy was originally charged with breaking and entering, along with sexual assault, until it was found out that the girls had let him in.
At a hearing on Sunday, the two “victims” would neither deny nor confess to the charges, as they refused to answer any questions. The boy told the court as an earlier hearing that it was not the first time the girls had invited him in and kissed him. The judge ruled that the boy could be detained in juvenile detention until he is 18, but there is a possibility on his early release, depending on whether he seemed suitably disciplined.
It seems very extreme at the very least, although it is a deeply religious country, which is infamous for its strict decency laws. Last year, for example, a British couple was sentenced to a month in prison after they were caught kissing in a restaurant. The couple were astounded as they claimed the kiss had been a mere peck on the cheek.
