Gary Speed’s widow, Louise Speed, has revealed she stormed out of the house after an argument and spent the night in the car before she found him hanging in their garage. She revealed this information during the inquest into the former footballer’s death at Warrington Town Hall in Cheshire today.
Coroner Nicholas Rheinberg ruled there was not sufficient evidence to say the suicide was intentional. However Louise also stated that she had received a text from Gary in the days before he died that had ‘talked in terms of taking his life’. She is quoted as saying “We walked in the house and we had an exchange of words about something and nothing. I can’t even remember what it was.”
She describes the exchange of words: “I suggested I would go for a drive. He blocked the back door and said ‘You are not going anywhere’. I went upstairs and lay on the bed for probably about five or ten minutes. Then I decided to go for a drive, to clear my mind (and for) space to think.” She then said that she drove to the ‘top of the road’, but her husband did not respond to her call when she attempted to reach him. Upon driving back to the house she found she had locked herself out and consequently slept in the car.
Louise woke up at about 6AM and went to the outside bathroom, but found that the shed keys were missing. She then checked the shed, and then checked the garage, where she saw Gary hanging through the window.
A terrible tragedy, and may the legend which is Gary Speed Rest In Peace.
