”Godfather of rap”dies at 62

 

Gil Scott – Heron, known as “the godfather of rap”, has died in New York aged 62.

His most famous song, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised””, was first released in 1970 when he was only 20.

He influenced generations of rappers including Kanye West, whose latest album contains a long excert from Acott – Heron’s ”Who Will Survive in America”?

He was a novelist ,at age 19, with the publication of “”The Vulture”, a murder mystery.

He also published a volume of poetry. No cause of death was given but he was known to be HIV positive and had struggled with drug addiction through much of his life.
