Text messaging did not impress the judge

Posted on 11:26am Friday 1st Oct 2010

Hull, England

A judge in Hull, told a teenager, she had "let down her generation" for sending a text message which almost ruined two trials. " You are 19 and have demonstrated such lack of common sense and judgment that you had to be discharged from a jury."

The teenager was sentenced for  passing on by text message false allegations to a juror who was sitting on another case. The allegations were false based on gossip the juror had heard outside court.

The teenager, aged 19, was on jury service and the judge told her he spared her from jail only out of " humanity " . She was given an 8 month suspended prison sentence.

The teenager had sent to text messages to another woman juror she had only just met and who was sitting on another trial.
